ADONAI is a substitute term instead of trying to pronounce the personal name of God. In Hebrew, we have in the Masoretic Text the four letters of God’s Name: Yod-Hey-Vav-Hey or written in English as YHVH. Since the ancient manuscripts do not give us the vowel sounds, it is only human speculation as to how to pronounce the Holy Name. Jews, being respectful of the Third Commandment, use this term ADONAI/LORD as a replacement word. The Talmud explains, “In the Sanctuary the Name was pronounced as written;
